A time with a friend? An unexpected encouragement or compliment? A moment to enjoy the gift of God’s creation? A special sense of God’s presence? An answered prayer? b. <image:title>Blog - The Well - Developing Discernment: Part 1 - The greatest benefit I have received from engagement in Ignatian practices is the development of discernment. Ignatius teaches that with time, attention, and practice we can develop discernment in collaboration with the Holy Spirit’s activity in our lives. Ignatius gives us tools for growing in our discernment of Jesus’ presence in our lives and how Jesus is continuing to invite us into His activity in the world around us. Therefore, I am called the series Developing Discernment.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Well - Developing Discernment: Part 1 - Something unexpected, yet life changing, occurred from his friendship with these books. Inigo began to notice a shift developing in his interior life. He still held ambition of knightly glory, yet those dreams brought only temporary fulfillment. His imagination began to include a life of service to King Jesus, resulting in an undercurrent of peace and joy that was deeper and more consistent.</image:title>
<image:caption>In his autobiography, Ignatius would write of himself in the third person saying, “When he thought of worldly matters, he found much delight; but after growing weary and dismissing them, he found he was dry and unhappy. But when he thought of…imitating the saints…he not only found consolation in these thoughts, but even after they left him, he remained happy and joyful.”[ii]</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Well - Developing Discernment: Part 1 - Consolation is marked by a grace that keeps me open to God, aware of His presence, and draws me towards collaboration with His work in the world. Consolation leads towards growth in Christ. While it is easier to live in consolation during the good days, the grace of consolation can also be experienced as faith, hope, and love as the undercurrent of our lives even when the surface is rough and stormy.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Well - Developing Discernment: Part 1 - In contrast, desolation is marked by a struggle to notice or feel God’s presence with me. This usually also involves a closing inward on myself which impedes collaboration with God’s grace in my life and with His working in the world around me. Desolation feels very distracting to my pursuit of following Jesus. Desolation can be a confusing experience to walk through. Jesus, who promised to never leave us or forsake us, seems to be distant and quiet. David expresses this in his lament of Psalm 13, “O Lord, how long will you forget me? Forever? How long will you look the other way?” (NLT) However, let’s remember that desolation is not only what I experience but how my heart is responding to God and others in the midst of all I am walking through. In his book, “God’s Voice Within”, Mark Thibodeaux helps us to see this as he defines desolation as “the inner pull away from God’s plan and away from faith, hope, and love.” [iv] Desolation can often be initiated by life’s hard circumstances but is has more do with how my inner life is responding to God and others in the midst of all that life contains.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Well - WELCOME TO THE WELL - In Biblical times, before the modern convenience of water being piped directly into our homes, the well was a place of gathering as people came to collect the water their family needed to sustain life for the day. Out of this sprung several significant encounters in the story of salvation.</image:title>
<image:caption>It was at a well that Abraham’s servant first met Rebekah, who was to become Issac’s wife. (Genesis 24:1-67) Jacob first encountered his wife Rachel at a well as she was watering her faither’s sheep. (Genesis 29:1-20) Moses met his wife Zipporah at a well. (Exodus 4:18-26) The most well-known encounter at a well is probably Jesus and the Samaritan women. (John 4:1-16)</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - The Well - WELCOME TO THE WELL</image:title>
<image:caption>In some ways, the logo for Wellspring can be seen in depicted the imagery of a well. Viewed a certain way the blue curved borders on the top and bottom of the image look like the capstones of a well while the tan inside lines depicts the walls of the well which contained the water which is at the center of the design. And in many ways, the biblical symbolism of the well mirrors my own desire and purpose in the creation of Wellspring Spiritual Direction. Spiritual direction is a practice of encounter and relationship.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - The Well - WELCOME TO THE WELL</image:title>
<image:caption>Still, as closely as the logo design and intent of Wellspring is connected to the imagery of wells, the ministry is not called “The Well” but “Wellspring”. There is an important reason for this. As vital as the well and water is to sustaining life, the well and water would not be available without its source – it’s Wellspring. At Wellspring our focus in not only providing drinks of soul refreshing water every four to six weeks through the practice of spiritual direction. Our intended desire is that through the practice of spiritual direction, our presence with each other would actually open a greater window to the loving presence of Jesus who is our source, our Wellspring.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - The Well - WELCOME TO THE WELL</image:title>
<image:caption>If looked at from above, a labyrinth might look exactly like a maze or a random design of wandering paths which will lead to the center of one selects the correct path from the many available options. Yet, this is not the case. What differentiates a labyrinth from a maze is that a labyrinth does not have dead ends, there is no wrong path. One prayerfully enters into the labyrinth and will reach the center as long as they keep walking. The path will feel like it is winding and wandering – moving closer to the center or move out away from it. Yet, as long as one keeps walking the path at their own prayerful pace, they will reach the center. There is no rush to move out of the center upon reaching it. There is time and space to sit, reflect, pray, journal, be silent, or even praise. When ready the prayer moves out from the centers and prayerfully walks the winding path back out into the rhythms of life.</image:caption>
